 WEST STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — Ben Nickley, founder and executive director of the Berkshire Bird Observatory, will be the guest speaker at the second of West Stockbridge Historical Society's Berkshire Nature Talk Series on Friday, March 15, at 7 PM in the Old Town Hall, 9 Main Street, West Stockbridge. The Berkshire Bird Observatory began as part of Green Berkshires' lower Taconic range biodiversity survey. Nickley, who started the program and leads the bird-banding in summer and fall at Jug End State Reservation in South Egremont, is now spinning off the observatory and pursuing its non-profit status.  LEE, Mass. — Patriot Armor Systems has been granted $200,000 from a state program for manufacturers. The Healey-Driscoll administration announced on Monday the 17 grantees of the Massachusetts Manufacturing Accelerate Program, which dispersed a total of $3,144,982 to manufacturers for the purchase of new capital equipment to support production, customer demand, and the workforce. "Patriot Armor is a manufacturer of bullet resistant, blast resistant, and forced entry security glass. Update: The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified the human remains found in Great Barrington to be those of Sascha Cameron (DOB 3/14/76, Great Barrington). The cause of death has not yet been determined. GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — On Friday, Feb. 23 the Great Barrington Police Department and the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit responded to a report of human remains found in Great Barrington. According to the District Attorney's Office, the remains were discovered approximately 20 feet in the woods surrounding the Mahaiwe Cemetery. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Applications are available for the 22nd annual Daniel Pearl Berkshire Scholarship. The $2,000 award is given in memory of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter kidnapped and killed in Pakistan early in 2002. Pearl earlier worked in the Berkshires at The North Adams Transcript and The Berkshire Eagle. While Pearl's career was in journalism, he was also a gifted musician, trained as a classical violinist. He played guitar and mandolin as well, and while living in the Berkshires he performed in a bluegrass band. SANDISFIELD, Mass. — The Sandisfield Arts Center announced the 3rd annual Daniel Manacher Prize for Young Artists. The Call for Art is open through April 7, 2024. Up to three artists will be selected as finalists, each receiving $400 to support their art practice. Winners will be notified no later than June 1, 2024. An exhibition of the finalist's work will be held in the fall at the Sandisfield Arts Center.  GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.— The W. E. B. Du Bois Center for Freedom and Democracy held a pre-birthday reception on Feb. 22, at Saint James Place in honor of civil rights pioneer W.E.B Du Bois. During the event community members met the center's first Executive Director Ny Whitaker and Michael Blake, the inaugural visiting scholar in democracy. "As Du Bois contemplated our collective challenges, he also set out a vision for what our democracy could be and called us to action for the role that we could take in making it a reality," Whitaker said.
