County Residents Earn Bay State Games Skating Medals

Berkshire Organizations Awarded MassWildlife Habitat Grants

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration today announced over $365,000 to restore 234 acres of wildlife habitat across Massachusetts.    The Department of Fish and Game's (DFG) Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) is awarding MassWildlife Habitat Management grants to five organizations and two municipalities. The MassWildlife Habitat Management Grant Program (MHMGP), provides crucial financial assistance to private and municipal owners of conserved lands to improve habitat for wildlife, steward biodiversity, enhance climate resiliency, and promote public recreational opportunities. Great Barrington Pedestrian Killed on Route 7

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — A Great Barrington man was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle on Route 7.    The victim was identified as Niall Nordoff, 41. According to his Facebook page, he attended Mount Everett Region School and worked in landscape design.    Police reported that they had received two calls early Thursday -- one at 5:55 a.m. reporting a man wearing dark clothing walking in the middle of the roadway and another that he had been struck by a pickup as officers were responding.    Officers arrived on scene moments later and discovered a man on the southbound shoulder of the roadway. Free Composting Drop Now Offered at Great Barrington Transfer Station

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — In collaboration with Berkshire Compost, the town Transfer Station will now accept composted food waste from residents of Great Barrington and Housatonic.    The program is free.   Compost is food waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill: scraps leftover from cooking or meals, cardboard and certain paper products.    Composting food waste significantly reduces the garbage that heads to the landfill. Compost is filled with nutrients used in farming and agriculture to fertilize soil.   "Composting is a natural, sustainable way to recycle food waste, it is used to build healthy soil for gardening and agriculture,"

North Berkshire Waste District Interested In Hydrogen Facility Project

ADAMS, Mass.— Members of the Northern Berkshire Solid Waste Management District (NBSWMD) were intrigued by a plan by Local Power to work towards community-wide decarbonization through a waste hydrogen facility in Western Massachusetts. 

In a presentation on Jan. 11,  Local Power President Paul Fenn told the district members that Local Power helps local governments set up community-wide decarbonization with a focus on localization "as a core strategy in an industry defined by centralized energy and capital sources." 

He said the community choice aggregation firm helped usher in community choice power supply programs to many towns and cities in Berkshire

Great Barrington Appoints New Libraries Director

It's Showtime For The Guthrie Center Instrument Lending Library

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — George Laye, founder of the instrument loan program at the Guthrie Center, was inspired to create the "Check it Out" musical instrument loan library after taking a stroll down memory lane.

Laye said he was thinking about his mother participating in an orchestra as a young woman, and then he recalled years later discovering her long-forgotten violin in the attic.  It occurred to him that there were probably musical instruments in many attics, storing songs meant to be played.

Construct Receives $2M for Renovation of Cassilis Farm in New Marlborough

NEW MARLBOROUGH, Mass – Construct, a nonprofit provider of affordable housing and support services in the Southern Berkshires, has received over $2 million in funding from Federal Home Loan Bank Boston's (FHLB) Affordable Housing Competitive Funding Program, in partnership with Greylock Federal Credit Union.   This award is a step toward providing New Marlborough with its first affordable housing units. The money will help Construct create 11 new apartments at Cassilis Farm, a Gilded Age estate set on eight acres.
