NEPR Hires New Berkshire County Reporter

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Nancy Eve Cohen will cover Berkshire County for New England Public Radio.

Cohen has been a freelance reporter with NEPR since 2012 and has produced an impressive body of reporting for the station including recent pieces on the legalization of marijuana in Massachusetts, local farming and school safety from the perspective of students and teachers.

"Nancy is an experienced and accomplished reporter," said NEPR news director Sam Hudzik. "She has a particular interest and expertise in environment and agriculture stories - and has produced some brilliant ones for us."

BMC Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Starts Better Breathers Club

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center at Berkshire Medical Center is starting a Better Breathers Club, in collaboration with the American Lung Association.

Better Breathers Clubs are welcoming support groups for patients and caregivers affected by chronic lung diseases including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer. The club helps patients to learn better ways to better cope with lung disease while getting the support of others in similar situations. Led by a trained facilitator, these in-person adult support groups give you the tools you need to live the best life you can.

Locals Have Springfield College Football in National Rankings

A trio of Berkshire County football alumni have helped Springfield College to a 2-0 start and the No. 25 ranking in the country according to D3football.com.   Pittsfield High graduate Chad Shade, Pittsfield resident Jonny Bianchi and Hoosac Valley graduate Zach Wright each is contributing for the Pride, who have outscored opponents by an average of 42-11.   Shade was recognized by the region’s college football writers after an eye-popping Week 1 performance against Western New England.   Shade was recognized with the New England Football Writers Association’s Gold Helmet Award after rushing for 247 yards and six touchdowns in a 42-21 win. Berkshires Beat: SVMC Corridor Gallery Exhibits the Work of Bennington Murals Project

The Bennington Murals Project will exhibit work from their first mural at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Corridor Gallery through Oct. 17. The exhibit is open to visitors daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The show will feature work by the nine artists who contributed to the project, which depicts animals native to Vermont in a scene that progresses from dawn to dusk. Among the artists are Bennington Murals Project Founder Forest Byrd of Bennington, Cristal Call of Bennington, Crystal Harris of Bennington and Katya Harris of Albany, N.Y.

Visitors to the show will be able to purchase prints of parts of the mural. Proceeds benefit both the Bennington Murals Project and the

Biz Briefs: Greylock's Lee Wildcats Debit Card Generates $2,130 for School

In July 2016, Greylock Federal Credit Union introduced a new debit card featuring the Lee High School Wildcats logo and school colors. Since then, every time a credit union member signed up for a Wildcats debit card, Greylock made a donation to Lee High School, generating $2,130 for the school.

Lee Middle and High School Principal Gregg M. Brighenti said the funds have been used to purchase furniture for the library, to fund students who couldn't afford school trips, to pay for two dinners the students served to senior citizens, and to buy a small cookie oven for the Lee High School booster clubs to use at games as a fundraiser for their programs.

Monument Mountain Cup Soccer Tourney Returns Sept. 22

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- The Monument Mountain Cup Soccer Committee will host a 3-on-3 youth tournament on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Monument Mountain Regional High School.   Boys and girls divisions will be contested in the under-10, under-12 and under-14 age groups.   All teams of three to four players are guaranteed at least three matches with the top four teams in each division advancing to the semi-finals.   The final games for each division will be played under the lights.   The entry fee is $100 per team. BCC's Director of Nursing Resigns

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Director of Nursing Tochi Urbani has resigned from Berkshire Community College.   Dean of Enrollment Management Christina Wynn confirmed on Friday that Urbani submitted his resignation letter on Sept. 4 and will be leaving the college on Oct. 3. The resignation comes in the midst of college officials working to elevate the program's accreditation from a recently issued "approval with warning" status.   "At this point, we are placing a high priority on finding an interim director of nursing," Wynn said.    Wynn said the change will have no impact on the students who have just returned for the semester nor does she expect
