Jean Davis, 93

March 29, 2018

RICHMOND, Mass. — Jean Vreeland Davis, primarily a homemaker, died peacefully on March 29, 2018, surrounded by her family.

Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., on July 12, 1924, she was the daughter of John Bean Vreeland and Ada Scoble Vreeland. She graduated from the New Rochelle High School in 1942 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the Julliard School of Music in 1947.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bayard G. Davis; and by her sister, Ruth Abele of Richmond, Mass.

Before retiring to Richmond, Mass., in 1983, she and her family lived in New Rochelle, N.Y., where she was the director-teacher of the North Avenue Presbyterian Church Nursery School and worked in the New Rochelle Day Nursery as a bookkeeper.

Mrs. Davis was interested in history and in tracing the genealogy of her family. She was a descendant of Nicholas de Basquerville, a cousin of William the Conqueror; Jacob Leisler, the last Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam; and Gideon Schaates, who was killed in the Schenectady Massacre of 1666.

Mrs. Davis sang in the choir and was a soloist in Christ Methodist Church. New Rochelle, for 35 years. She was a member of the Richmond Congregational Church and served there in several capacities. She was a member of the Massachusetts Audubon Society and led school groups around the Pleasant Valley Sanctuary, a member of the Berkshire Concert Choir, the Berkshire Camera Club, and an usher at the Tanglewood Music Festival. She enjoyed music, travel, and most of all her family and friends.

She leaves two sons, Bayard Davis (Sharon) of Churchville, N.Y., and Keith Davis of Williamstown, Mass.; nine grandchildren, James, Joe, Jason, Jennie, Justin, Jared and Jordan of Churchville, N.Y., and Wesley Davis and Katie Davis of Williamstown, Mass.; and eight great-grandchildren at the time of her death.

Funeral notice: A memorial service will be conducted at the Richmond Congregational Church by the Rev. Janet McKinstry at 2 p.m. on May 12, 2018. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richmond Congregational Church or the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
