Susan P. Bachli, 60

January 26, 2019

DALTON, Mass. — After a long struggle with complications from diabetes, Susan Patricia Bachli, 60, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019, with her brother at her side.

Susan, known better as "Sue," "Susie" or "Sue Z" to her many friends and family, was born on August 27, 1958 to the late Jacob “Butch” and Mary Jane (Daly) Bachli. A lifelong resident of Dalton, she attended the Central Berkshire Schools and was a graduate of Wahconah Regional High Schools class of 1976. Sue went to Westfield State College and Berkshire Community College, earning an Associate’s Degree in Hotel, Restaurant Management in 1980.

She worked with special needs adults through BARC for a period of time before starting her career in the restaurant business. Her pride and glory was opening her own restaurant, Jacob’s of Dalton, in 1986. The business began on Main Street and then Susan bought what was once her Grandfather Daly's bar on Daly Avenue. Jacob’s was sold in 2007 when her health was declining. Jacob's has been a hub of the Dalton social life for years with many lasting relationships built there. The family and friends there were family to Sue and she always enjoyed visiting with her regulars as well as the new people coming in.

Sue was a terrific cook and loved to entertain either in the restaurant or in her home that she loved on High Street. She was an obsessed Red Sox fan and had an amazing green thumb for flower gardening as well as her large collection of African Violets. She also loved to decorate for every holiday and was known for always sending cards to family and friends. When she wasn’t busy baking or making her home beautiful, she loved going to the beach to bake in the sun and occasionally try her luck at a casino on the way home. She loved to go to Rockport, Mass., or Cape Cod.

Susan is survived by her brother, Peter Bachli, his wife Kristy (Lasch) and her cherished nieces, Sarah Elizabeth Bachli, a senior Engineering student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Katie Rose Bachli, a Sophomore Meteorology Student at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. Sue is also survived by many cousins and great friends she has made over the years. She also leaves her dedicated friend and daily caregiver, Maryann Buckley. She also leaves behind her beloved yellow lab Penuche, who used to visit, giving her great joy.

Special thanks to her other caregivers, Dickilyn and Jackie, who helped her to stay in her home and get to her many appointments along with the many shopping trips. Also to Dr. John Burnham and the Dalton Medical Crew, especially Ellen. We are also very grateful to the members of the Dalton Ambulance Volunteers for their hard work and professionalism for the times they needed to respond. Sue really enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was a kindhearted giver to many.

Besides her parents, Susan was predeceased by her longtime companion, Steven "Z" Zink, who died in July of 2005; as well as her beloved grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends.

Although she loved flowers, it is her request that donations be made to either The Denise Kaley Fund, The Robert "Boog" Powell Scholarship Fund or the Dalton Ambulance Fund in care of the funeral home. She would love for you all to plant a perennial flower in the spring that you can enjoy in her memory.

Funeral notice: According to her wishes, there will be calling hours at Dery-Foley Funeral Home on Friday, February 1, 2019, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Dalton on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 11 a.m.
