LENOX, Mass. — Alice Tobler Hoff, 96, of Lenox, died Thursday, May 27, with family around her at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center.
Alice will always be remembered as a caring, generous person with an infectious smile, and a natural ability to make everyone feel welcome. She was a caretaker for everyone around her, and was always willing to give advice. As the matriarch of the family, she is irreplaceable. She will be deeply missed by her loving family and her many friends.
She was born in Pittsfield on July 15, 1924, the daughter of Karl and Elsa Vettiger Tobler. She attended
local schools, and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1942.
Alice and her late husband, Elwin C. "Pete" Hoff, were married in Pittsfield on June 26, 1946, and started their family. They eventually had four children: Linda, Glenn, Sharon and Steve. They spent 63 years together, with numerous moves around Lenox before building their retirement home on Pinecrest Drive.
Mrs. Hoff worked for the town of Lenox as a bookkeeper for many years at Lenox Memorial High School. In addition, she managed the business E.C. Hoff Inc. for her husband, while he constructed homes around Lenox. She also served as the bookkeeper for her son, the late Glenn K. Hoff, at Hoff Services for many years.
She was a faithful member of the Church on the Hill, where she was active in church functions and sang in the choir for many years. In addition to her commitment to the church, Alice was active in the community at Hancock Shaker Village, Tanglewood and various other social groups around town.
She enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and socializing. Music was also particularly important to her. Alice loved cooking and spending time with family and friends, and many memories were made around her dining room table.
Alice moved to Kimball Farms where she has lived independently for the past 8 years. Her time at Kimball Farms allowed her to continue her social involvement in various groups and activities and gain many new friends, who she deeply cherished.
She is survived by two daughters; Linda H. Lagarce (and David) of Pasadena, Calif. and Sharon H. Faber (and Mark) of Stockbridge; one son Steven E. Hoff (and Amy) of Irvine, Calif.; daughter-in-law Laurie Hoff; one sister, Heidi Haskins, of Pittsfield and her sister-in-law, Judy Tobler.
Alice was a loving grandmother to Brian Lagarce, Glenn D. Hoff, Shannan Hoff, Jennifer Mitchell, Jeffrey O'Meara, and Alec Hoff, and Samantha Hoff, and adored her 12 great-grandchildren: Sydney, Zack, Parker, Blake, Bryce, Savannah, Dawson, Jaydee, Jason, Adrian, Winn and Tate.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Pete, her son Glenn K. Hoff, and by her brother Werner (Tob) Tobler.
The funeral of Alice Tobler Hoff will be on Tuesday, June 1, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church on the Hill in Lenox, with Pastor Elizabeth Goodman officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Those attending may offer their personal condolences to the family following the service.
