LANESBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Lanesborough Bulldogs' Jack Cangelosi struck out eight and allowed just three hits in a complete-game, 9-1 win over Westminster Friday in the opening round of the Cal Ripken Baseball 12-and-Under Western Massachusetts State Championship tournament at Bill Laston Field.
Cangelosi had a perfect game through four innings before Ben Mattson belted a solo home run for Westminster.
Panayiotis Constantopoulos went 3-for-3 with two homers, a double and three RBIs for the Bulldogs (6-6), who also got a homer and a pair of RBIs from Derek Paris.
Josh Polumbo doubled in a pair of runs in the win.
"We jumped on them early in the first, scoring four, and then in the third Derek and Panny each hit a solo home run," Lanesborough coach Rick Paris said.
Lanesborough advances in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournament, moving on to face Greenfield at 9 a.m. Saturday, a day that also will feature a skills competition for all six teams in the field.
Westminster on Saturday evening will face the loser of Saturday morning's game between Turners Falls and Naragansett.
Narragansett 6, South Berkshire 1
LANESBOROUGH, Mass. -- Narragansett's Kane Cellata hit a single over third base to score Dominic Hall and give their team a 6-5, eight-inning win over South Berkshire.
Narragansett moves on to Saturday morning's winner's bracket game against Turners Falls at 9 a.m.
South Berkshire falls into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament and will face the loser of Greenfield and Westminster at 5:30 Saturday evening.
On Friday night, Evan Heath, Callan Hoff, Danny Munch and Colin Durkin each had a pair of hits for South Berkshire.
