Berkshire Voters Head to the Polls on Primary Day
02:32AM / Tuesday, September 04, 2018

Voters go to the polls today, Tuesday, to decide a number of party primaries, several of which will determine the winner before the general election in November.

Voting in all cities and towns is from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; find polling places for your communities here. Those enrolled in a party must vote in that party's primary; voters who are unenrolled may choose which primary to vote in.

Perhaps the most significant race on the ballot Tuesday is for Berkshire district attorney. Three Democrats are vying for the post in an election that will determine the winner of the office -- barring any last-minute write-in effort in November.

Paul Caccaviello, the incumbent of only six months, is attempting to retain his spot as the county's top prosecutor against challengers Andrea Harrington and Judith Knight.

The three candidates have met in a number of debates and forums across the county over the summer, giving voters an idea of how they will run a department with an enormous effect on the local criminal justice system.

Other primary races on the Democratic side include a choice for who will run against the Republican ticket for governor: Jay M. Gonzalez of Needham and Bob Massie of Somerville are vying for gubernatorial nomination and Quentin Palfrey of Weston and Jimmy Tingle of Cambridge
for that of lieutenant governor.

William Galvin, longtime secretary of state, is being challenged for the nomination by Josh Zakim of Boston; and the Adam Hinds, incumbent state senator, by Thomas P. Wickham of Lee.

The 1st Massachusetts seat has two nominee choices, incumbent Richard Neal and attorney Tahirah Amatul-Wadud of Springfield.

The other offices up for nominations either have one or no name.

On the Republican side, three candidates are vying for the chance to run against U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren in November. Voters will choose between Geoff Diehl of Whitman, John Kingston of Winchester or Beth Joyce Lindstrom of Groton.

Charlie Baker is being challenged for the gubernatorial nomination by Scott D. Lively of Springfield. James R. MacMahon III of Bourne and Daniel L. Shores of Hingham running for the nomination to run for attorney general against Maura Healey.

Other offices up for nomination have either one name or none.
